Build your skills in Mudbox while building your own Frankenstein Monster.

Course Overview

In this three week training package, Sony Santa Monica's Young Choi will take you through the process of creating a Frankenstein monster and help build your Mudbox skills along the way.

Young covers the pros and cons of using Mudbox over other similar products and presents a sculpting overview. He then shares his extensive experience on different sculpting brushes, layers, stamp tools and stencils. You will learn about extracting maps from your sculpt, texturing, painting, posing, rendering as well as lighting.

The package also provides examples of work from three of the top students who participated in Young's CGWorkshop. You will be able to follow their progress through the course, view their work and read the feedback they received.

What You'll Learn


Week One

Practical Work

  • Start sculpting your version of Frankenstein using a base mesh that is provided, sculpt should have all the basic forms by week two.


Week Two 

  • Adding details to the sculpt using Layers, Stamp tools, and Stencils
  • Extracting Maps from your sculpt
  • Texturing overview
  • Texturing demonstration using paint layers, different brushes, and Photoshop

 

Practical Work

  • Finish your sculpt and start texturing your character using different layers in Mudbox.

 

Week Three

  • Painting different channels in Mudbox
  • Posing your character
  • Rendering and lighting your character using viewfilter

 

Practical Work

  • Make final touches to your character.  Pose, light and render your character using Mudbox.

Minimum Requirements

Software Requirements

  • You will require one of the three 3D Autodesk 3D packages (Maya, Softimage, or 3dsMax) and a good working knowledge of the program. 
  • Photoshop is recommended but not absolutely necessary.
  • You will also require a copy of Mudbox 2012.  A 30 day free trial version is available here.

 

Hardware Requirements

At a minimum, the 32-bit version of Mudbox 2012 software requires a system with the following hardware:
Windows - IntelPentium 4 or higher, AMD Athlon™ 64, or AMD Opteron™ processors with SSE3 instructions set support.

  • 650 MB free hard drive space
  • Certified hardware-accelerated OpenGL graphics card
  • Ethernet adapter or wireless Internet card
  • Three-button mouse or certified Wacom tablet
